Teresa Walter hopes everyone in Havre de Grace got out to greet their neighbors last night.

The chief of the Havre de Grace Police Department joked that everyone in town knows their neighbors already, but Tuesday night was different. It was National Night Out, when communities nationwide joined hands in a show of support against neighborhood crime.

Walter, whose contract was renewed in December 2010 for three more years, has been the top cop in Havre de Grace since July 2005. During her tenure, city officials have applauded Walter's department for a reduction in high-profile crimes.

That may be a reason there weren't more of the traditional porch parties around town.

But there was one, at the intersection of Stokes and Ontario streets.

Walter, Captains Roy Mitchell and Wayne Young, CPL Ken Terry and PFC Jeff Gilpin, as well as Mayor Wayne Dougherty visited with more than a dozen residents at the party.

The photos above are from OPAC (Ontario-Otsego Positive Action Ctte)'s annual National Night Out Porch Party. Thank you, Sarah Fields, for organizing it again for us this year, and thank you, Cheryl Strader, for hosting! We live in such a great part of such a great town!
