The weather held off and people took to the streets as Havre de Grace celebrated the first First Friday of the 2012 season.

The city celebrates First Friday from May through December, drawing visitors and residents into the city's historic arts & entertainment district.

This year's opening First Friday included a new twist: closed roadways through the district with outdoor seating at one of the most popular restaurants in town.

Laurrapin Grille hosted big crowds on Washington Street, while around the corner, MacGregor's opened it's new deck.

At one end of Washington Street, Island Jack remained open for one final night—five years after opening. At the opposite end along St. John Street, D'Bohemia welcomed regular foot traffic to its new storefront.

Musical acts performed on three street corners and in front of a number of downtown businesses. Tents lined Washington and St. John streets, while Franklin Street was covered with cool cars.

the dynamic of having a couple of block closed off worked very well. In fact, becauase parking was deferred a few blocks out from Washington and St Johns, people parked up on Union and Stokes, even, and walked around businesses they might have missed if they could have parked in front of Billee's shop. Very interesting!!

I'd like to take this opportunity on behalf of the Arts & Entertainment Committee of HdG Main Street to thank the volunteers, City of Havre de Grace, DPW & Police Dept., merchants and vendors all for helping to make last night's First Fridays one of the most successful ever. The request by Main Street to close additional blocks was critical in moving this enormously successful event forward. We hope to build on this success in the future and are appreciative of those who have maintained a positive spirit and willingness to assist Main Street in its mission. It was indeed a glorious evening.

Unfortunately Bahoukas had less traffic in the store than a non-first Friday. Guessing that having the snowball truck blocking the end of Franklin at union discouraged visitors from traveling to Vancheries, Bahoukas or chiaparellis.

I agree Barbara. When I got up there and saw how the snowball truck was parked across the top of Franklin, the message was "This is the end of First Friday's fun," or "it's over." I didn't see anybody crossing Union Ave. Have it parked at Congress, the other end.

Yes, I would say that by having some blocks closed it may have looked as if that was the limit of the "First Friday" area. It was around 8:30 when we made it to that corner, but we did venture over to Bahoukas.

Would love to see more blocks closed and more vendors. What a great evening. And thank Mother Nature!

Overall, our family had an enjoyable night! Good dinner, great weather, bought some items from The Tattered Barn (although we never could find the face painting!)....Agree, would be nice to see more vendors. There was a pretty big empty area in the street across from Jana's Javas to Laurrapin. Would enjoy seeing a Rita's, Bruster's, or Bomboys booth set up :-)

If anyone is interested in being a vendor or knows someone that would, please have them call Matt Kriegle at the HdG Main Street office, 410.939.1811. There is a vendor application process that must be completed. And an addition to my previous posting, I would like to sincerely thank the Mayor and city council for their unanimous approval of the additional block closings. We are indeed blessed to have forward thinking folks both in our city government and throughout the community! Kudos to all!

Hi Rebecca. I was hoping Vancheries would have a vendor spot on a closed street. I wanted to enjoy your unique and delicious cuisine. I noticed you guys were open as I drove passed but I wanted to eat outside. Maybe next time?

I think we'd all like to see that. Let's make sure nobody inadvertently signals and "end" to First Fridays, and instead, re energize Bahookaville, and give the huge crowd that we had Friday, and the even bigger one we'll have next month more to look at and do!!!!!!!

The return of the Rowdy Boys at Biller's Bike Shop is always a highlight of Frist Friday.

Agree with all above. I think it was one of the best yet! Loved being able to cross streets without cars driving by. It was more family friendly. Definitely move the snowball truck.

I really enjoy First Fridays..but, was really annoyed at the fact they took about 75 or more parking places from those who attend. One block should be enough..for vendors, restaurants, etc. Very elderly folks had to walk for blocks to park..I truly believe they will now lose more attendees because of blocking parking spaces. Sad~ Not the same..now.

Somehow, some way..there should be a way to drop off the elderly downtown so they will not have to walk so far..please someone..come up with a solution..everyone is not as young as they used to be but love to participate in our wonderful events.

I agree! I miss out on doing a lot of things because I have problems walking. I've only been here a little over a year and I'd like to participate in some local events.

If someone was energetic, it would be fun to have bicycle 'rickshaws' in town. This way people could park in the lots and have a fun ride to First Friday. This would make it easier for those with difficulty walking to participate.
