New Program Pushes Advanced Placement Classes
Havre de Grace and Aberdeen high schools will benefit from the program.
Students and educators at Aberdeen and Havre de Grace high schools soon will have access to a grant-funded program to push higher education and consistency in curriculum for students in military families.
Harford County Public Schools on Monday will unveil the Advanced Placement Training and Incentive Program (APTIP), which is administered through the National Mathematics and Science Initiative (NMSI) and the Initiative for Military Families (IMF).
Aberdeen and Havre de Grace are the only two schools in the state to be awarded the opportunity, after 29 schools in 10 states in Fall 2011 and four schools in 2010 were targeted.
APTIP aims "to increase the number of students involved in math, science and English Advanced Placement (AP) courses," according to a news release from Harford County Public Schools.
The release notes that the program is set up in four tiers: teacher support, student support, incentive awards and program management.
Patch will have more on this opportunity for local students following Monday's introduction.

When and where is Monday's introduction taking place? Is there going to be an information and question time allowed for parents and students? How will students be selected for participation? Is this program going to be integrated with AVID students or will it be they be mutually exclusive?
Basically, I have far too many questions to be able to reach any valid conclusions on this new program.

Heather —
I'll be attending the announcement Monday and reporting on it. I've asked if it will be open to the public, and I'll comment back here again once I've heard.
Thanks,
Sean

Heather— Just heard back from school system today. Sorry for the delay. ... Here's the reply: "parents are allowed to attend but given the number of invited guests and the number the board room holds, we will have to shut the doors after our capacity has been reached."
Thanks,
Sean
