Mardi Gras Returns to Havre de Grace
The 5th annual Mardi Gras parade is scheduled for Feb. 21.
In New Orleans, Bourbon Street comes alive for Mardi Gras every year.
For the last five years, the same can be said about the side street in Havre de Grace.
The 5th annual Havre de Grace Mardi Gras parade begins on Bourbon Street near Havre de Grace High School, turns down Washington Street, veers onto St. John Street en route to the Lafayette statue.
For a town that thrives in the summertime, a late winter party can be a jolt to the local economy.
"The parade began five years ago and has grown to include more than 20 organizations to include Harford County Department of Recreation, restaurants, musicians, and local small businesses,” Brigitte Peters, Havre de Grace marketing and tourism manager, said in a statement. “As the tourist season slows, we felt the need to wake up our community, think local and celebrate small business with great food, music, art, and a Mardi Gras Parade.”
The parade will include floats and performers from local organizations and businesses.

Ron Browning of La Cle D'or Guesthouse, and an organizer of the parade, said: “It will be exciting to see the floats created by our restaurants and businesses.
"Laurrapin Grille is continuing its “Be Local” theme with a float and Silks at Bulle Rock will be voting in a King and Queen. MacGregor’s Restaurant kicks off celebrating its 25th year with a car raffle, featuring the Buick Verano in the parade. The creativity of our city will shine on Fat Tuesday," Browning said.

A bunch of alumns from my old high school formed an 'Alumni Clown Band' (they were pretty good too) and played at a lot of civic and private organization events. They also did gigs at suburban town festivals. Anyway, it would be cool if there were enough HdG high school band alumni to form a band. Maybe along the lines of the marching jazz bands like they have in New Orleans??... I know of a local music teacher that could help. She shall remain nameless but her initials are Becky Fitzgerald :-)

Is the parade event mainly for adults or will it be a family-friendly event as well?

I visited Laurrapin's on Sunday and met the owners and others that were bussy at work for the parade. I haven't heard of it until then. I think it is a great idea and deserves statewide attention. What better place to celebrate Fat Tuesday than in the French named town of Havre de Grace not to mention we have our own Bourbon Street. Even if you don't want to pronounce it that way!! I can see this becoming a destination spot for this activity. Very cool!!!
