Lewis Lane Closing To All Traffic at Route 40
Residents will be unable to access homes located off Lewis Lane.
Lewis Lane will soon be closed at U.S. Route 40 for construction.
The project will last about two months, and would take begin on or about April 30—impacting the 1500 block of Lewis Lane Extended, according to an announcement from Havre de Grace City Hall.
According to a statement from the city: "The construction will greatly improve the character of the roadway and sidewalks will be added during the process."
Aside from the road closure, other traffic changes will be put into place:
- Grace Manor Drive will become one way between Chapel Road and Joe Hill Drive. Drivers will need to use this route to gain access to Grace Manor, Havre de Hills and Halls Road.
- Joe Hill Drive will become one way from Grace Manor Drive to Chapel Road. Drivers will utilize this route to access Chapel Road from Grace Manor and Havre de Hills, as well as Halls Road.
The city said the improvements are being made with street safety and roadway efficiency in mind.
Questions or concerns should be directed to the Havre de Grace department of public works at 410-939-1800.
TELL US: Will the road closure impact your regular travel patterns? How do you plant to adjust?

Will this be a complete road closure between the train tracks and Route 40? If so, this will affect people leaving Weis that want to go eastbound on Route 40. I guess they will have to make a U-turn at the light at Lewis Lane.

Translation: This is the best we can band aid this cluster#@$%.

I have to agree. The City wasted several opportunties to create an alternate route to get traffic from "up on the hill" down to Lewis Lane, and provide an alternate to the increasingly congested Chapel Road. The pass through in Grace Manor/Havre de Hills was the band aid. Some of us lobbied for a road that would connect the bottom of Bulle Rock with Lewis Lane, tying in Havre de Hills/Grace Manor, and connecting to the lower half of Bayview Estates.

I bet the folks on Joehill Drive are going to be thrilled... redirecting traffic down their street, and all.

Laurynn, don't know if you live in Grace Manor or not but i have several friends who do and trust me the residents on Joehill Drive are more than willing to put up with 2 months of increased traffic if the end result is 50% less traffic through their neighborhood from people who are using it as a short cut and most of whom have no consideration for the families who actually do live there.

Heather -- is this a temporary one-way assignment? I'm taking it to be a permanent change. I live in Bayview, and this route is my preferred route to hit Weis/BP. I will be thankful for the sidewalks, as I often walk to Weis via the cut-through.

With Lewis Lane closed I can't wait to see all the traffic trying to get up and down Chapel Road off of Ontario at the 7-11! Woohoo.

Finally reducing the flow down Grace Manor. I hope it stays this way!!

I always take this route to/from Chapel to 40 because of the traffic backups and delays by the 7-11 at Ontario st. This construction will add a lot more congestion to that mess, but I agree that the road is in bad need of repair by Weis and the BP station. Hopefully afterward it will be easier to navigate the narrow streets.

it would be just as easy to navigate the narrow streets if they would eliminate the street parking - isn't that the garages and driveways are for. Also, they put those stupid circles in the roads there - people don't go around them - they drive right over top of them.......couldn't they put normal neighborhood speed bumps there? Just another thought.....

I do the same. It is unfortunate that many others don't respect the laws and families along that route. It is impossible to get onto 40 W from 155 in the afternoon. It makes "picking up a few groceries at Weis" an hour trip after waiting in that long line of traffic. I don't see that this will help anyone but the residents that live along that route. Is this how our City is going to operate? Apiece a few and inconvenience the masses. When will the real problem be fixed?? I feel bad for those families, but that is a public road that is paid for with ALL of our tax $$$. If you want a private driveway than you should have to pay for it. Now I have to pay for your driveway and I can't use it.

The one way traffic is only for the two months of construction then it goes back the way it is now.

I don't think so. It was mentioned as an aside to the Lewis Lane construction closure, not to mention it would make less sense because traffic for the duration of road closure is going to be FAR less that it is now.

maybe you all could go thru bulle rock to rte 40, but please obey the stop signs unlike the residents of bulle rock.

Because if it wasn't already trespassing ( it is a private road when Blenheim Farm passes through those gates,) it is so far out of the way to render the idea impractical. Also, the intersection next most dangerous in town after Otsego/Ohio/Pulaski and Ohio/Ontario.... is Blenheim Farm/Pulaski.

Well i to travel thru Grace Manor as an "ALT" so from my point of view I am sure the residents are happy for the "BREAK" from all the traffic......
1.Speed of drivers....Hey people there are kids in those houses and if their toy goes towards the street and you cannot see the child come between parked vehicles "BAD SCENERIO"
2.Blind curve b4 you get to the 3 way "STOP" VERY DANGEROUS!!!
3.I gather from all the children outside during work hours that some of these stay at home MOMS/DADS are possibly doing day care and when it is nice out the kids are out there....If u see a vehicle at the end of a driveway blocking the passage to the road pretty obvious..they do not want the child on a bike/playing
with their toy chasing it into the street.
I cannot count how many times i wanted to go knock on the Aberdeen police officers door and wanted to inform them their are SERIOUS issues with the 3Way "STOP" right by his/her house.

While I do want more convenient routes to access Rt. 40 from the hill, you have to consider that more intersections over the tracks would amount to more train whistles/noise. As it is, in Bayview those horns are deafening sometimes.

I never quite understood the purpose of multiple stop signs at the 3 way intersections. The straight through road should not have the stop. Example: Chapel and Tydings…. Grace Manor and JoeHill, Lewis Lane and Grace Manor. If speed and safety is the issue in a residential area, put in a speed bump.
Ramps on and off of Rt 40 at 155 to serve both directions would sure alleviate a lot of the cut through traffic through developments and over congestion of Chapel and the Ostego, Ohio/40 intersection

Because this city LOVES using stop signs as speed control because the fire company HATES speed bumps. Take a look around town, there are nearly always a stop sign in spots that if you were anywhere else there would be speed bump or hump. Seriously, look in the Weis parking lot if you are not convinced.

My question is; where is the money coming from?
Would it have been more efficient and less costly to implement Mr. Fitzpatrick's suggestion?

Growth brings revenue, and I think we can all agree that here has been some growth in the area. Infrastructure that served us well a decade ago has an expiration date.

Not saying Mr Fitzpatrick's suggestion is not worthy, but would it only serve Bulle Rock residents since they would probably gate it?

Sglad to see some work being done on Lewis long, long time coming. I also believe that Grace Manor and Joe Hill Dr should be made into one way streets. I don't live there but I do use those streets and have relatives that live there. For those that live in that area have a lot of trouble trying to get out of their own drives ways or onto the streets because of backed up traffic from those that do not live their. They use their drive ways but drive ways don't always take care of the cares of those familes. They did have the speed bumps in the road when first buit in Havre de Hills but those were tearing up peoples cars we hve had our mud flaps broken from those speed bumps now if they had been placed not so steep it would have been better. The streets are too narrow there in both places Grace Manor and Havre de Hills. One more thing some people have NO RESPECT for the people that live there or their familes, I've seen so many cars go right through the stop signs like they aren't even there. I followed a car in that area last week and they went through every stop sign didn't even slow down.
To Dawn I would keep an eye open on the thought about going through the Halls property because most of the time the property owners are the last to know when it comes to it. Sad to say City, State or County if they want it they will make a way to get. I hope it all works out for the good of those that live in that area they deserve better.

I live on Joehill Drive, It is not fair that we are a through way for the other neighborhoods! The speeding is outrageous. Our children are in danger,I am sure all of you would not like it. STOP CUTTING TROUGH OUR NIEGHBORHOOD<PERIOD!!
