Havre de Grace Takes on Rachel's Challenge
An assembly is scheduled during the school day, and another is open to the public at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Rachel Scott was the first person killed in the 1999 shooting at Colorado's Columbine High School.
Today, her legacy lives on through Rachel's Challenge, which drives individuals to "treat others with kindness and compassion" with the goal of changing the surrounding community.
More than 1.5 million students each year are given Rachel's Challenge, and Wednesday, Havre de Grace students will join in. After student training is completed in the afternoon Wednesday, another presentation will be made Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Havre de Grace High School auditorium. That event is open to the public.
"Everyone is invited, and we are certain the presentation will have a tremendous impact on our community," Havre de Grace High School band director Rick Hauf said in an email to Patch.
After all is complete Wednesday, Rachel's Challenge encourages students to continue positive interaction through the Friends of Rachel Club.

This program is a great one. The school I worked at in Cecil county did it in middle school last year. It is a very touching program. It is sad, but very insperational!

Oh my goodness what a moving program!!!!If you have a child in school I cannnot imagine what parent would NOT encourage their child to take part in a CHALLENGE to reduce prejudice in the school...I often hear the complaints that the schools do not offer good incentive progrms for their children..WELL FOLKS here it is and it will be presented again on Friday nite at the middle school. What an inspiring child whos life was cut short by hatred and prejudice.Kudos to Mr. Hauf and Principal Walling for opening the doors to help make change...REMEMBER our youth are the FUTURE who better to educate our future then OUR future.I am sure "THE PATCH"will follow up on this program and watch it grow and become contagious.

My family attended this program last night, and we all thought it was sad but also wonderful. I really think it will make a difference at school and everywhere.
