Jeff Gahler Will Run For Harford Sheriff

Gahler also ran for sheriff in 2010, but lost to incumbent Jesse Bane.

Jeff Gahler will run for Harford County Sheriff in 2014.

Gahler, a Maryland State Trooper, ran for sheriff in 2010 but lost to incumbent L. Jesse Bane.

In his letter release just before midnight Monday, Gahler said: "Although we did not achieve our goal during the 2010 election year, I would not have traded the experience of meeting and listening to so many concerned Harford County residents and business owners or challenging the status quo for anything and I look forward to expanding these efforts in the future."

See Gahler's letter attached to this article.

The Republican lost by a 3,000-vote margin—51.6 percent to 48.3 percent—in one of the latest-decided Harford County races in the election.

He didn't rule out running again in 2014 when asked by Patch the night of the 2010 election.

"Certainly it will be something I look at," Gahler said. "We already have plans to store all the materials, the signs, with that as a possibility. So we will move forward on that plan to stay actively involved in the Harford County community and the Republican party."

In March, Gahler wrote a letter to the editor criticizing Bane's assessment of the police force in the county. Bane responded in an interview Patch and a letter to the editor, clarifying the data while inviting Gahler to meet.

Gahler declined.

That Gahler will run for sheriff again is no surprise. In Bane's letter to the editor in March, he referenced that Gahler was running for sheriff.

Gahler has launched a website for his campaign at www.gahlerforsheriff.com.

That is great news! It is obviously time for some new leadership in Harford County.

I agree. This is welcomed news for the citizens of the County who want to move past stagnant politically based philosophies. At the very least, the Sheriff will have to step up his game and stop reacting with tired tactics to serious events.

Jeff Gahler is a very nice person and would probably make a good Sheriff. His problem is that Sheriff Jesse Bane is doing a great job for Harford County and deserves to be reelected.

Jeff Gahler will be a good sheriff and a sheriff with his integrity in place. Jesse's best days are well behind him and don't think he doesn't know it.

Oh poo, another two years of Bane bashing and pro-Bane brown nosing? This isn't the presidential election, couldn't he have announced it a year from now?

It's just as important. I moved from a place where the police didn't keep up and the crime and disorder took over. Things happened and continue to happen that you couldn't handle here. Our safety is important and should be debated every day. The Sheriff should be challenged to do better every day. Once crime takes over, it cannot be reversed.

Sorry, but I think it's a little premature to announce any election plans, and also, Mr. Gahler's role in his police agency certainly hasn't trained him to be the sheriff. He and Roger Sheets should give up gracefully.

Hazard and Emily, you make an interesting point on timing. Any personal ideas on why that is?

I do not have a "personal idea" on the timing, but I know Mr. Gahler's reason from his interview on another online news site. He waited until concluding his career with the State Police before making an official announcement concerning 2014.

Kristen - Given that you are an Aegis alumn, what is your relationship with Jesse Bane? The Aegis rarely, if at all, ever questioned Bane's questionable leadership. They basically gave Bane a free pass on the Mark Forwood and Fred Visnaw issues.

Ed Jr., I spoke with both candidates during the last election. I feel I have a good working relationship with both individuals. If you have specific questions for me to ask, either Bane or someone else, don't hesitate to shoot me an email. I want to be sure to seek answers for whatever questions you may have.
