Driver Killed in Conowingo Crash Monday Morning

One person died, the other was hospitalized after a collision on Route 1 at Shuresville Road.

Police said that a Pennsylvania man died following a crash that closed Route 1 for several hours Monday morning.

At 5:45 a.m. Monday, deputies from the Bel Air Barrack responded to a crash on Conowingo Road, according to Maryland State Police.

Anila Vadala, 28, of Philadelphia, was driving a Honda Civic north of Shuresville Road on Route 1 when he lost control of his vehicle, which spun 90 degrees into the path of a 2002 Ford Ranger.

The Ranger collided with the Civic on the passenger side before both vehicles came to rest against the guardrail, police said.

Police said Vadala was driving downhill on a left turn "during foggy and wet roadway conditions" and that neither speed nor alcohol appeared to be a factor in the crash.

Vadala was taken to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 10 a.m., according to Maryland State Police.

The driver of the Ranger, Carl Absher, 55, of Drumore, PA, was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, The Aegis reported.

Route 1 was closed from approximately 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. as officials cleared the scene.

Why can't the state put rumble strips, flashing lights, (to alert motorists of what lay ahead), and, or Buffers along the shoulders of the that section of the Rt. 1 highway to absorb shock, as we do on steep grades. The Cecil County entrance to the dam has the same problem ??

The speed limit needs to be reduced to 25 MPH at the approach to both sides of the dam with flashing warning lights and rumble strips. There have been FAR too many accidents in this area. The State must act now!
My deepest sympathy goes out to the Vadala family.
