Councilman Joe Smith: Being Gay A Non-Issue

Joseph C. Smith was elected to his first term as a Havre de Grace City Council member in May.

Joseph Smith never addressed his sexual orientation during the spring election season.

He didn't have to.

As Smith—currently serving his first term as a Havre de Grace City Council member—told a publication recently, Havre de Grace didn't alow his being openly gay to be an issue.

“One of the highlights of my election in Havre de Grace was that my being openly gay was never an issue during the campaign," Smith told The Washington Blade. "None of my opponents mentioned it and one even told me after the election that if anyone brought it up they were quick to say it was a 'non-issue.' This demonstrates quiet progress for a part of the state that has a pretty conservative reputation."

Smith was featured by The Blade in an article entitled "'Quiet progress' in Harford County."

Smith, 48, and his partner, Don Starr, have lived in Havre de Grace since 2006, the article said.

Openly gay politicians (and non-politicians for that matter) want to be known for their competence and not just for being gay. Candidates must be considered based solely on their merit, record, aptitude and skill. No other factors should ever be considered and I’m glad Havre de Grace residents made the right decision.

That's odd. Not that it would of mattered to me, but I didn't hear any of this prior to the election. What do they mean by Quiet Progress??

It is a non-issue! Joe has what it takes to make Havre de Grace one of the most desirable places to live Maryland.

I would like to personally congratulate Mr. Smith on his view of his sexuality as being a non-issue. It should never be an issue in campaigns or be considered somehow a requirement for office. Havre de Grace, in particular, is a "tolerant" community for the most part and its diversity is an attraction for many.
I do take issue with the presumption by many that somehow conservatives are "close-minded" when it comes to matters such as these. I know many people of that ilk, especially Libertarians, who have never shown an intolerance for one's sexual orientation or lifestyle. This is a bedrock of Libertarian-Constitutional belief. All too often we've heard that if you oppose any law or measure connected with sexual lifestyle you are branded as a bigot or homophobic. Much is the same when those who support equal rights in hiring practices and oppose affirmative action are branded as racists. Framing arguments in this light does an injustice to responsible debate and damages the credibility of the accuser, not who the comments are directed to.
I look forward to a day when mutual respect is shown for all views, what ever side of an issue is being debated. To make assumptions and assertions that damage ones personal reputation and degrade responsible political argument is something I'm sure Mr. Smith will be quick to deride. He has a unique opportunity to carry the banner of tolerance for all, regardless of whatever side is making their argument. I wish you luck, Joe.

It should not be about gay or straight, black or white, male or female, democrat or republican, liberal or conservative. It should be about serving all of the people of Havre de Grace and doing what is in their best interest and the best interest of the city. All other personal agendas aside.

I concur. Certainly a non-issue. I voted for Mr. Smith because I like his ideas and his attitude. I'm very proud of him. He has my full support (unless he drastically changes his ideas). I'm all for 'louder progress'.

It should not be an issue. However, it will become an issue when one of his less noble councilmen make it an issue to support their own agenda.

It was not an issue because Mr. Smith kept it in the closet during his campaign. Now that it is out and he is such a strong advocate for same-sex marriage, he will not be reelected. I suspect he has already decided not to run in the future and that is why he is okay with now being public about it. If one's sexuality is not an issue, why make it one now?
