Brooks Named Aberdeen Football Coach

Havre de Grace alum led alma mater to state final in 2010.

Johnny Brooks, Havre de Grace High School's football coach for 13 years, was introduced Tuesday as Aberdeen High School's new football coach.

Brooks, a 1981 Havre de Grace grad, led his alma mater to the Class 1A state title game in 2010.

He had been a teacher at Havre de Grace since 1994 and has accepted a social studies position at Aberdeen, where he replaces John Siemsen as head coach.

Aberdeen was 1-9 last season.

Havre de Grace High School is accepting applications for its head coaching job and intends to conduct interviews during the week of May 16. Havre de Grace defensive coordinator Greg Long is a candidate for the job.

More details to come on Patch.

For Havre de Grace? No word yet. Assistant J.R. Clark would be a logical choice, and I think he would be great, but I imagine they will take applicants.

Warrior at heart and still leaves a scholarship at HDG in memory of Jo'van Brooks Class of 2001. Warrior at heart!
A job well done.
Eagles embrace Mr. Brooks and know he is a man with integrity, sincerity and a love for teaching.

I am sure coach brooks will do what he does teach. Inspire and coach it is not his job to poice boundry exceptions that is the boards job

Its a joke the way the kids are allowed to transfer and still play the reaming of the season. I find it a total embarrasment to MD public school system.

I believe Brooks is related to Washington. Brooks lives in Aberdeen, i wouldn't be surprised if Washington moved in with him.

If not for the boundary exceptions HDG would have not been able to compete within Harford County, so be thankful the board allowed them. A lot of the talented athletes in HDG are all from Aberdeen. Aberdeen would have been a dynasty if they all stayed in their zone schools. If a parent seeks to give their child the best opportunity to receive a scholarship to college and the board approves the boundary exception, the implication of doing something improper is lost on me.

And maybe we as a society should start giving college scholarships to the students who earned the right to a free or reduced education in college for ACADEMIC successes! Isn't college and high school for that matter about getting an EDUCATION!

Harford County Public Schools has a written policy that says sports is not a valid reason to be granted a boundry exception! HDG nor any other school in the county is not entitled to stack their decks with players from other schools period.

its just a shame that these kids are chasing an athletic scholorship they way they are. If they had the test scores a private school would get them a free ride to high school and then an even better chance at a scholarship. I am by no means an expert on high school football but alot of the other sports the kids get noticed at camps not games. I see no reason to change school just to be a HS state champ.

I agree with all of the comments. I was just stating an opinion, not that is is right or wrong. Academics should always be the first priority. I can guarantee, that due to the Aberdeen girls basketball success last year, there will be a large amount of transfer students and boundary exception requests for young ladies into Aberdeen High. Parents are trying to give their children the most exposure they can. And Aberdeen is returning all but 1 player to its team, and exposure will be abundant. Is that improper?

Got off topic, I believe Coach Brooks will do a great job!! I also believe he will continue to a positive influence and mentor to the children within both communities!

Yes, nothing against coach Brooks.. I think the system is very screwed up. BTW, i hear the girls basketball coach isn't going to be there next season. If girls transfer to AHS to play BB i think that is absurd. I'm sure girls get more exposure at AAU tournaments then HS.

TO your question is it improper, I would say No, if the child is granted a boundary exception. Is it right, No. Would I do it, No.

You know what REALLY IS SAD???The chances are some of the athletes are reading this and for those students who play their hearts out to read some of this immature ranting well that is a shame!!!As for Coach Brooks ...like I said he teaches,he inspires, and Yes he is a GREAT COACH..BUT...If you have issues with boundry exceptions there is a open door policy at the school board mtgs..ATTEND ONE and put your voice to the people who make the rules..To AHS have a great season ..TO HHS play your hearts out boys and that is what Coach Brooks taught you.

Hollee, As sad as it may make you to think about right vs. wrong, sticking your head in the sand is immature! Yes the county has a open door policy, but when people lie on their childs boundry to exception forms, it is hard for the county to do anything about it! I think any of the athletes who read this blog would be interested to know what Coach Brooks allowed and what is not the right way to do things! I wish HDG well and I know that even without the Brooks extras, we will kick butt this year. I will miss Mr. Stallings yelling "Here we go Warriors, Here we go"..... though!

I think that the parents who have written comments about a family transferring is very offensive and downright a form of verbal abuse. You don't know a person family situation and circumstances. Personally, children have been wanting to exit Hdg. not for footbal but for racial reasons that no one will touch. Who wants to be in a school that consistently suspends lower income and minorities at a higher rate. Zero tolerance for minorities but Whites and Upper income who can come with attornies let's discuss an alternative option.
Let's just call a spade a spade. Hit the real issues in a school were the young African women who was hired last year went to evry organization to fight for her rights to be employes with out being harassed for the color of her skin. Anyone ask her why she was graciously railroaded out.
Don't use Mr. Brooks as a reason kids are running to play football. Open the files nd read the data on suspension. So, on any given day with 29% minority population were they all misbehaving on a full moon. Let the NAACP and a good Baltimore Attorney read all the suspensions and behavioral reports.

The sad part is the Mr. Brooks is highly educated and attend school to an educator. His goal is not to Coach but to help everyone have an equal opportunity at getting an Education in the U.S.A. Many highly educated young men had options to go academic or sports.

As a woman of color I am offended tha you go straight to the "Race" issue to try and cover up a problem instead of facing it head on.

I am really tired of people with negative comments concerning Washington. He is a child and Mr. Brooks proudly claimed him and whatever reasons he had to relocate was his families personal business. People really need to check themselves when they write about children.
I think the harassment this child received from the board his parents should have gotten a lawyer and started their own school. You have no clue what his family was going through and it was really no ones business.
Boundary exceptions investigations should be for all sports not just the sports people of color basically play. People can move up and down the route 40 corridor just like people move from Bel Air , CMilton, Fallston, etc.
Children move with the parents. In the economy we live and many factories along the route 40 corridor is it obvious that people come and go.
If you are really that concerned about where people attend, lower the rent so people do not have to live along the route 40 corridor.

I have no issue with Mr. Books. Please read the first comment I left on the board. The open door policy is terrible. I don't know how many other counties in MD that allow it. I do know the WCAC makes the student/athlete sit out a year. With the sole pupose aimed at limiting transfers for athletic reasons .

Everyone knows the route 40 schools are treated very different and its always been a color issue. Take your head out the sand. Mr. Brooks is respected and loved because he never sees color but kids who want an opportunity to play a sport and excel.
Not many left out here who truly care about the child.
When Mr. Brooks lost his son he could have walked away but he stayed there for others people's kids.

Boundary exceptions are a board issue not a Brooks issue. If student's are moved based on parent's living condition what can they do.
Do we track baseball and lacross?
