BOYS SOCCER: Warriors Are Bound for States
Havre de Grace defeated Sparrows Point in penalty kicks Tuesday to win the Class 1A North region title and advance to the Class 1A state semifinals.
Brad Davidson converted the fifth straight successful penalty kick for Havre de Grace after 100 minutes of regulation and overtime couldn't determine the Class 1A North region final.
The Warriors and Sparrows Point finished regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods deadlocked at one. Sparrows Point missed its opening penalty kick, while Havre de Grace converted all five to advance to the Class 1A state semifinal Saturday at North County High School in Anne Arundel County.
Farhan Bachu, Austin Sylvester, Connor Haffey, Gabe Larrimore and Davidson scored for Havre de Grace in the best-of-five penalty kick period. Davidson's goal touched off a wild celebration on the turf at James R. Harris Stadium.
Bobby Smith scored a first-half goal for the third straight postseason game to knot the game at 1-1 after Sparrows Point got on the board in the opening minutes of play.
James Antonopolos made a handful of highlight-reel saves in the Warriors goal, and the Havre de Grace defense grinded against a physical, attacking Pointers squad.
Saturday's game time will be determined on Wednesday, Warriors athletic director Heather Crawford said.
This is the third appearance in the state tournament for the Warriors, who are seeking their first boys soccer state championship.

Congratulations, Warriors! Great team effort! Super job by our goalkeeper!
By the way, Sean, because of the banner hanging in the gym, I think the Warriors won their first and only state championship in soccer in 1926!

Ron, you're right. The MPSSAA record books don't go back that far. Good call!
Is anyone going to the game Saturday? We'll have information about t-shirts and a bus and all that fun stuff first thing Thursday.

Here's a great picture of Tyler Sylvester who played a huge role in this victory. His main job the entire game was to shut down the Pointers go-to player #10. Job well done! http://www.baltimoresun.com/explore/harford/sports/high-school/ph-ag-boys-socccer-1111-20111108,0,385891.story
