Baltimore/DC: Worst Drivers in America

Find out where Baltimore and DC rank in terms of accident data.

Think drivers are bad where you live?

You may not be alone.

A new Allstate Insurance Company report names Baltimore and DC as two of the places with the worst drivers in America.

The 2012 Best Drivers Report ranks DC as the worst place in the nation for drivers and Baltimore one step behind.

The report ranks America’s largest cities in terms of car collision frequency to make a ranking on which places have the best drivers.

Tell us in comments: What are your biggest gripes about drivers in your area? How could they improve?

The report ranked cities according to average years between accidents and relative accident likelihood compared to the national average.

Sioux Falls, SD, was ranked the number one place for “best drivers,” according to the report.

DC received the lowest rank among the 200 cities studied that had available data: 195. Baltimore was ranked 194, the second lowest slot on the list.

According to the report, residents go, on average, 4.7 years between accidents in DC and 5.3 years between accidents in Baltimore.

In Sioux Falls, the average is 13.8 years between accidents, the report stated.

The report also analyzed company claim data to calculate the likelihood that drivers will get in an accident compared to the national average.

Sioux Falls drivers are 27.6 percent less likely to get in a car accident compared to the national average, the report stated. DC drivers are 112.1 percent more likely to get in an accident compared to the national average.  In Baltimore, it’s 87.9 percent more likely.

This isn’t the first time Maryland has received bad marks for driving.

A GMAC insurance report in 2011 said Maryland drivers ranked 49 out of 51 in terms of how they scored on a written test on road rules, according to the Baltimore Sun.

This is what I've been saying all along. Maryland drivers are awful. Nice to see it recently documented how terrible folks - including I suspect many of you - honestly are on the road.

Just do better, for the sake of our kids.

Joe: Because I drive these roads everyday. Baltimore County drivers are awful. They drive distracted, constantly.
No one uses turn signals, everyone tailgates like a champ. They also seem to be oblivious of turn lanes, and 3 or 4 way stops. Things like causing gridlock in our area - for example, on Honeygo road near Campbell. It happens, every day.
Fundamentals that are supposedly being taught in our "private, overpriced driving schools".

Liberty without responsibility is dangerous.
You'd have to give me the context of my 'not liking liberty' comment in whatever other thread you are pulling this from. We both know this is, on face value, a gross distortion of reality.

Those days ended with corporate greed and "Trickle Down" economics implemented in the 80's. Of course, hindsight is 20/20, but it doesn't seem to stop some folks from willfully ignoring these facts.

The only thing that's trickled down is the quality of our society. Yet, so many want to keep it going, in the name of 'liberty'."

Joe: OK. Thanks for grabbing that for me.

You know the ol' saying "your right to swing your fist ends where the other man's nose begins?" It's a quote from Oliver Wendell Holmes.

I believe it applies here, economically speaking.
The middle class has been bled dry over the past 30 years through this economic theory of 'trickle down', which has proven out to be nothing more then 'trickle up' just packaged by those in the elite class as "hey give us more money and we'll give you more jobs". They are still doing it today, and yet middle to lower middle class people are still being brainwashed into it.

Really though, the bigger offense is towards our tax code, which needs dramatic reform on all levels.

I actually think if we talked you'd find we agree on more things then you think from a conceptual standpoint.
I just have different starting points, and take more of a multi-faceted approach to resolving them. It's something neither party has the will to do.

After spending a lot of time in my car in August, we drove to Canada and then a week later to the Outer Banks, my biggest pet peeve is people who don't use the passing lane (left lane) as a passing lane. It drives me crazy when people just sit in the passing lane and refuse to get into the right-hand lane to let traffic pass.

The left hand lane isn't just a passing lane, in many states it's the fast lane. I guess it's what you grew up with.

I agree 100% with you Kym on the passing lane comment. Maryland drivers are supposed to follow the "Keep Right" laws (see provided link) but many do not and often what ensues is road rage. I've driven in many parts of the US and overseas and this area is without a doubt one of the worst regarding this matter. I think this is one area that needs to be enforced more diligently by state troopers.

I say pull over the slow poke bottleneckers!

@Ryan - looks like that bill was never adopted. Best I can tell, under normal conditions, the only law about using the left lane is that you can NOT be going slower than 10MPH lower than the limit.

Maryland is one of only a few states without a "move over for passing traffic" laws

Dave, thanks for pointing that out, I stand corrected. But still, should just be common sense/courtesy to get out of the left lane and let people behind you pass. I find most of the time it's someone on their cell phone not paying attention to anyone around them.

Perhaps we should take some lessons from the Europeans.

I think a lot of the problem is that people don't view driving as a responsibility, it's just a privilege to them. Personally, I'd like to see it be harder to get a drivers license as I am tired of people hitting me. I've been involved in two accidents in the last year and neither of them were my fault. People running stop signs and people rear ending me while I'm stopped at a stop sign... it's made me even more paranoid of what people are going to do while driving.

@fred - Even if they are going the speed limit, if the person in the left lane is able to get over into the right lane, they should, when someone behind them approaches at a faster rate of speed. It is not up to you to police the other car's speed. That action usually brings upon road rage from the driver behind you or their zipping fastly into the right hand lane and back into the left lane in front of you, sometimes at a close distance. Too me, it is not worth the risk. I just get over in the right lane and let them continue on their merry way and sometimes hope there is a cop ahead who pulls them over for their speeding :-)

Jacqueline Magee

I live in Baltimore and they are the worst drivers. They don't use their blinkers. They speed up and block you when you are trying to merge into a single lane. They ride your bumpers and wonder why they hit you when you come to a stop. They have to look at everything on the side of the road. If there is a drop of rain or snow they drop to 5-10 MPH. They block streets at red lights so you can't turn in or out. They don't thank you when you let them in front of you. I don't get how so many people can be so rude on the road. Common Courtesy goes a long way.

I really don't do city driving much, you should always have merging space between you and the car in front of you, so there isn't a real reason to thank you on that account. As for tailgaters, I slow down, just let off the gas pedal, I want to be going slow enough that if they get a chance to go around they have it. Even if it is 20 under the speed limit....

I made my daughter drive through it from Geipe to the other end where Starbucks and Sweet Frog are located before she could get her license!

I was driving there a couple weeks ago and a woman was walking down the center of the driving lane in front of the stores pushing her cart because she apparently had no idea where she had parked her car and was glancing down all the aisles to find it. After she passed the third parking lane and kept going straight in the middle of the lane I beeped my horn and she turned around, gesturing and yelling, although she did eventually move. Hey, lady, not my fault that you aren't smart enough to remember where you parked your car!

Do YOU know what "yield" means? Because it's a two-way responsibility. You can't just sit in the right lane and refuse to let people merge: you need to move left. A lot of times, I see people trying to merge and the folks in the right lane refusing to let them out of some false sense of lane entitlement. If you don't want to be cut off, drive proactively, anticipate the merge, and create space for the driver coming onto the freeway. Is a lot nicer than ramming people.

Cheers,

What I find fascinating about maryland drivers on this, is that people don't seem to understand the concept of trading lanes.

If I'm looking to get off, and the car behind me is looking to get on...then it's not hard to facilitate that transition. Yet it's also not surprising for me to be behind smoeone looking to get off the ramp - while I'm trying to get on the ramp - and my turnsignal is blinking for several sections while oblivious Maryland driver on the ramp doesn't see it (or understand what to do).

Amen. Once you hit the middle east your eyes really open. Many first timers always assume the burned out shells of cars along Iraq's highways are IED attacks. Mainly, they are regular traffic accidents. The accepted understanding is you are allowed to fly at your whim but if you mess up you are on your own - no help.

I think Americans can use a lesson from the Indians when it comes to driving. They manage to do so in complete chaos (lights don't matter, direction of traffic doesn't matter, cutting folks off doesn't matter), most cars don't have their side view mirrors out, for fear that it will be ripped off by another vehical... but somehow their nerves of steal prevail and allows them to drive with relatively little incident.

put down the phone. yes, i'm talking to you, obnoxious texting person. get off the highway if you're afraid of going the speed limit (this is something i wanted to scream at someone this morning on 95 - the girl was obviously terrified of driving on the highway). learn to merge. use your blinkers. use your mirrors. don't flip someone off for being in the lane you want to be in - they were likely there well before you decided to drive into their car. quit tailgating me. quit cutting off semis. stop acting like it's a competition, we're all trying to get somewhere and if you'd cooperate a little more we'd all get there a bit faster. quit gaping at accidents. quit stopping on the highway for no bloody reason.

oh, and all of you stuck in traffic? smile. just give it a try...see how much it improves your mood. or wait until i grin at you like an idiot, and try NOT to smile.

oh, and the guy who leaned on his horn for an hour a few months ago on 95? you're hilarious. i know you were angry, but damn, dude, you gave a whole lot of people a bad case of the giggles. do it again. :)

It's one thing to blame everybody personally but to have this rating, year after year, we need to ask ourselves, what are we going to do about it? Is it that we need to improve our road designs? More enforcement of traffic laws? Higher insurance premiums? Faster, quicker, and generally better mass transit? Taking people's licenses away that should no longer drive? Having shorter commutes (fewer miles driven=less likelyhood of a crash)? ect.

I don't think most people could pass the current test no matter what their age. The testing parameters are very strictly enforced and it has a high failure rate for first-time takers, as I noted below. Experienced drivers are sloppy in their habits and I think their eyes would be opened a lot if they were tested now.

When I drove on Germany ( 0n the Autobahn) you were only permitted in the left lane to pass. In California ( going over the Sierras) slow vehicles have pull off lanes that they "must use" to permit the traffic to pass.It is usually long enough to not come to a stop, Can't stand drivers so into their phone conversations at a stop light
( Yes , they still do it ) and the light changes and they are cblivious of it. If they hesitate too long you "again" get a chance to sit through another one .

Since I spend a lot of time on the road in both cities, I can say definately that Baltimore drivers are worse. Traffic in Metro DC is terrible, but people act like they're trying to go somewhere. Not so, the Baltimore Beltway, where people create traffic jams for no apparant reason, hog the left lane, drift in and out of lanes, stop on on ramps, and generally act as if they're lost most of the time.

I'm not a native Marylander. One thing I observed, looooong before moving to this state, is that turn signals are disabled on Maryland cars as soon as they get the license plate slapped on them. Also, what it is with this part of the country and STOPPING instead of merging on the on-ramps for expressways??? It happens in PA too. If you stop you'll never be able to get into traffic!

Boston never bothered me much. However, no one warned me they use the shoulder as an additional lane during rush hour. That freaked me out the first time I saw it. I also drove Philly rush hour for a while and it wasn't too bad at all.

What ever happened to police enforcement of traffic laws? Does not seem to happen in Maryland either.

Not only was the right side of my new vehicle carved open like a can opener was used in 2011 by a TEXTING TEEN, but it seems that people just drive all over the place. Giant SUVs with people on the phone weaving around all over the place. Driving around this state is like taking your life in your hands, even if you are careful, do the speed limit (which will get you cussed at and people riding your bumper) and always use your blinker like I do. Lets see...puting on the turn signal and changing lanes without actually waiting to make sure it is safe to do so. Just because you put on the turn signal does not automatically entitle you to change lanes at will, especially when there is barely a safe distance between the cars in the lane you are trying to go into. The people who do this expect everyone else to stop or slow down for them. Same thing when people try to merge from the on-ramps onto highways. They come flying into traffic because "why should they have to slow down and give the right of way to the cars already on the highway". Then again some drivers on the highway encourage that behavior by slowing down or almost stopping to let these fools get on the highway, thereby causing all traffic behind them to pile up.

Oblivous drivers on cell phones, women putting on makeup, drivers who feel the need to make constant eye contact with there passengers while talking instead of watching the road, and people reading while driving.
Oh yeah, idiots who drive with their pets in their laps. WTF!!! Put your mangy dog in a pet carrier. Little Snookums will survive the journey without having to cuddle with you.

Aggressive driving is suppose to be against the law, but it seems to be ignored by police. It looks like the big money violation - speeding, especially in work zones, is the only thing they are interested in. What needs to be done is to have police drive in truly unmarked cars during rush hour and start issuing aggressive / negligent driving tickets. Also, accidents that are determined to be caused by aggressive/negligent driving and cause severe rush hour delays should have a fine to cover the cost to the public services - police, fire etc. paid for by the driver at fault of his/her insurance company. Hitting people in the pocketbook is the only way to stop this.

Aggressive driving is not only ignored by the police, but judges go very easy on those who DO get tickets. I was in court once with a relative. There were about 5 drivers who had received aggressive driving citations. ALL were let off - Reason: late for work, late to daycare, late for an appointment, yadda, yadda. It's no wonder the police don't want to issue a ticket. It's a waste of their time.

I hate people riding my bumper especially on the beltway where it will get you killed. I have a pickup truck which doesn't have the safety headlights on all the time. When the people creep up on my bumper I reach over and put on my headlights. This makes it appear I am braking. This works great in the daytime. At night I bearly tap my brakes while placing my foot on the accelerator. No loss of speed at all but really drives the idiots crazy. Also gets them off your bumper. Might get an ignorant finger gesture as they pass by but I just consider the source. Most of the pile ups ( on the beltway ) are attributed to following too close and cell phone use.

If you REALLY want to see how badly people are driving, give lessons to a teenager who has just gotten his/her permit. The teen is usually doing fine because they are just learning and are cautious, but you really start noticing what idiots are on the road and realize that you have to warn him/her constantly about the other idiots.

The alleged failure rate for first-time test takers of the Maryland driving test is 80% and I believe it since very, very few of her friends and the other teens I know passed the first time. I shudder to think what the failure rate would be for experienced drivers, but I'm guessing 90%. We are all too complacent about road rules and most of us do think we own the road!

Mari, My father taught me how to drive. He taught me to always think the other person has the right of way even when they don't . When someone does do something that you think is stupid it won't be long before another one takes their place. Always consider the fact that tractor trailers need a stopping distance and pulling in front of them ( and narrowing that distance ) is a recipe for disaster. If someone "almost" causes an accident ( through stupiity ) don't take it personally and make matters worse. As long as he lived he never had an accident..and he drove a truck over the road .........lots of frustration but that comes with driving.

Hey Gomer--SHAZAAM! Is that really you?? Anyhow, I cannot believe that Allstate said, "from the "available data," DC was ranked among the worst and Baltimore the second"? Apparently, Allstate doesn't have any "available" data for drivers in New York City. My husband and I were there not too long ago and, as we were walking by Radio City Music Hall, we saw a man get into his SUV (which had been parallel parked). We sat and waited to see HOW this man was going to get out, since there couldn't have been an inch in front of him or an inch in back of him. Two cars had him blocked in. So, we waited and watched. This man (New York City driver) rammed the car in front, backed up his SUV, rammed the car in back and continued ramming them back and forth about 10 tens until he could get out. Not only did he damage his own vehicle but several others as well. Did he leave a note with his insurance info on it? Nope. He just drove away as fast as he could. So, just because Allstate doesn't have the "available data" doesn't mean anything. There are States whose drivers are worse than Maryland drivers. It's just that they drive like idiots and, even if they smash up another car, they keep on going. For the record, New Jersey isn't much better. I haven't been to Jersey for a long while; but, the last time I was there, they weren't even "allowed" to pump their own gas. I'm not sure why that was their State law; but, I guess they didn't trust them for some reason. Hmmm.

New York drivers, it's funny, they are good drivers but they also aren't.

The best way I can explain it is like this: The reason New York isn't #1 is because the natives all understand how to 'drive' up there.

The problem is when New Yorkers leave the state, or tourists come into New York.

As far as the guy who backed/pushed into cars parallel parking, I hate to say it, but that's probably the fault of the parallel parkers around him.

When you parallel park a vehicle, you are supposed to give yourself 3 feet distance between the cars around you. Now, there can be fault of the guy "in the middle" if he chose to wedge himself into that spot to begin with. Additionally, partial fault goes to anyone who leaves himself space on one side but not the other. I obviously can't tell you what that guy's situation was.

What I can tell you, is if you don't want your bumper colored up, parallel park intelligently or don't do it at all. Anyone who parallel parks up on someone else's car is just ASKING to be dinged. User error.

The Insurance Companies know. They're the ones who pay the claims. They calculate, examine and predict where every dime will be paid in the future. They must be very accurate, or they will fail.
They must also provide their figures every year to the State Insurance Commissioner of every State where they do business so their rates can be examined, verified and enacted.

LOL My nephew just graduated with a degree in Actuarial Science from UT. He had 3 offers from Insurance companies. He graduated in May and walked into a low six figures a year job.
Thats all they do is analyze. analyze and crunch numbers.

The companies must be knowledgeable about the future, that's where the actuaries come in.
The Insurance Companies were probably the main reason there was no apocalypse because of Y2K. (Remember THAT?) Power Failures!! Bank Failures!!! No Water!!! Mobs in the Street!!!
2 years going in, the companies added clauses to Commercial policies that ANY losses because of failure to address the 2000 trouble on computers would NOT be paid.
Well, programmers had a big windfall as they worked to prevent the problem. It worked and there were few problems.

Here's an observation many of you on the Patch are blind to: There is no question that many of these worst driving areas are full of ghetto brothas and illegals who by far are the worst drivers.

Thats not racist. Look at the list here of open warrants in Montgomery County alone where many illegal live and drive. Look at all the thousands of FTA and driving with no license or insurance. What happens when these people hit you and have no license or insurance?
http://www6.montgomerycountymd.gov/content/POL/districts/ISB/majorcrimes/Warrants/warrant.htm

SOMETHING must be done in MoCo to keep these people off the roads.

There is nothing there that says if the person with the open warrant is "illegal" or not.

Noting there to the blind racists like Steve who lives in a glass house.
We all are well aware that MoCo is an illegal alien paradise where some even vote in local elections. We all are well aware MoCo is a sanctuary county like Baltimore city.
When you see that list of thousands and thousands of names one can safely assume given the facts that many many are illegal aliens. If you can't see that.......

Laura, it is not racist given the facts and long time driving experience.

The aassumption many are illegal is backed up by the FTA's. If you are here legally and abiding by the law generally, you would appear. If you are here illegally you see no point since MoCo will do nothing about it and let this list grow and grow and grow to the size you see. If they were legal there would not be so many driving without licenses and no insurance.

1. There is not one instance of any "illegal" voting in a Montgomery County elect.
2. MoCo isn't a sanctuary city
3. You can't tell if someone is illegal or not by their last name or the way they drive

"An Illegal Alien's Guide to the Top Five Best Places to Live In America"
By Bob Dane Published June 30, 2011
"2. Montgomery Country, Maryland

If jobs are what attract you, then this upscale community close to our nation's capital offers the mother of all magnets.

The first step to getting a job is to visit a Casa De Maryland (CASA) Welcome Center. Their employment specialists help you find a job and don’t give a hoot about your legal status. They will even help you acquire an IRS-issued taxpayer identification number because, of course, you’re here illegally and not eligible for a real Social Security number. This powerful organization is truly the illegal alien Welcome Wagon with $16 million in assets, $4.9M of it acquired in 2010 from government contracts!

Don’t worry about Secure Communities because the County recently opposed its implementation. And for college-bound illegal aliens, take advantage of in-state-tuition now that the state passed the Maryland Dream Act."

Sorry, but I don't agree. I work in a 'not so nice' area in southern Baltimore, and I live in Perry Hall.
The drivers around Perry Hall are worse. It's not close.

They are bad drivers because 1) no one knows what 'yield' means 2) people are too busy on their cell phones to pay attention to how they are driving and 3) people who have no business driving in the fast lane are driving in the fast lane holding the whole line of traffic up which creates jams. For those that don't know, the left lane is for PASSING.

Not only does it hold up traffic in the passing lane, but it forces drivers to pass on the RIGHT, which is a hazard.
Not to mention folks in the middle lane on the highway who pass on the right for NO REASON other than they are completely ignorant of the fact that one is supposed to pass on the LEFT for safety.

Joe I knew I'd stir the liberal ostriches up. I defy any clear sighted liberal to drive I-95 from Cecil county to The Virginia border and count how many ghetto brothas and Latinos fly by you at high speed weaving in and out of traffic. You will see an occasional young white boy but the numbers are way out of proportion to the minority population. Those mean racist Maryland State troopers stop them a lot also because they are black forget the fact that most troopers can't tell the race until after they stop the car. Also how many innocent Americans are killed in accidents by illegals? Joe you give them evidence and they just cry racist.

I chuckle at the people that get all upset about people signalling and moving into "their" lane. If there's a decent gap, then I signal to let you know I'm going, and then I'm going. If you're paying attention and keeping a safe distance between you and the car in front of you, it should be a non-issue anyways. If I see somebody trying to get in, I back off the accelerator and let them in. No. Big. Deal.

You obviously are not the problem. It's the ones who put their signal on AS they are changing lanes (not before) to squeeze between two cars. Maybe the two cars that driver is squeezing between are too close together, but that does not seem to bother the idiots who do it. Too many people today seem to feel everyone must get out of their way.
Also, too many people don't seem to understand the concept of yielding coming on to a highway. If a driver coming onto a highway forces a car already on the highway to have to hit the brakes, he or she has created a hazard. Sometimes in life, you just have to wait your turn!

Mike R

It all comes down to patience. 95% of the drivers on the roads cooperate with each other. Its the other 5% that ruin it for everyone else. Big rig and motorcycle drivers are well aware of this.
