Aberdeen Man Kills Self Near Tydings Park Playground

The victim, 46, shot himself in his pickup truck in Yacht Basin parking lot.

UPDATE (10:25 p.m.)——An Aberdeen man fatally shot himself in Tydings Park just after 6 p.m. Friday as people gathered for a nearby concert.

Aberdeen and Havre de Grace police negotiated with James Dean McCreary, 46, of the 200 block of Parke Street for about 20 minutes before he killed himself. The victim raised a gun to his chin multiple times while officers attempted to dissuade him from pulling the trigger, Havre de Grace Police Department spokesman PFC Jeff Gilpin said.

At 6:11 p.m., McCreary fired a single bullet into his chest. He was transported by the Havre de Grace Ambulance Corps to Harford Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:38 p.m., Gilpin said.

The incident took place in the parking lot of the Yacht Basin, near the steps that lead up a hill to one of the city’s most popular playgrounds. Many residents had already sat atop the hill awaiting a 7:30 p.m. concert at the park gazebo.

An area surrounding a pickup truck was roped off with police tape.

At 5:43 p.m., Aberdeen police issued a county-wide “be-on-the-lookout” alert for an armed suicidal or homicidal individual driving a grey Ford pickup truck.

By tracking cell phone signals, Aberdeen police guided Havre de Grace police to the Yacht Basin parking lot. At 5:51 p.m., officers located the truck, initiated conversation and requested the ambulance corps for standby.

Police then established a perimeter, but struggled to clear onlookers from the area. Witnesses watched the events unfold from the hilltop park, the nearby Promenade Grille and many of the boats in the Yacht Basin.

Many onlookers remained on the scene as police continued their investigation, and the concert went on as scheduled.

This is really very sad on many levels. Although it is human nature, I hate to hear that police struggled to clear the onlookers and that said onlookers watched as the event unfolded.

Wow. This is a shock. Talk about reality check--this was way too close to home. Crystal, I'm sorry for your loss. I know that doesn't mean much, and I know that I would never be able to put myself into your shoes, but I am so sorry. I can't even imagine how painful this must be. Don't forget, always remember the good times you had with him--that will make all your memories just a bit sweeter.

To the family - at his job he always smiled, said hi stopped to talk and got things done. I saw he worked hard and care for all of you with such love and care in his heart. The other day I saw him troubled and told me some bad news that was hurting him . He seemed happier to talk . I let him know he could work through this and there are people to help. As I came back today from a long weekend to hear this tragic tale. My heart and strength go to you in this time of loss. Be strong -Remember the good times with him. He seemed to be a good hard working man

Jim McCreary was a special, hard working man that just couldn't say "no" to people who needed his help or services. I will remember him fondly. My (and many) prayers and thoughts are with Crystal, Yvonne and their family. A memorial service to celebrate Jims life & memory will be held this Saturday @ 1pm in Aberdeen - Press Toward the Mark Church - 131 S. Route 40 / located near the Aberdeen train station

On another subject, who allowed the onlookers to keep watching? And who was so uncouth and insensitive to let the concert "go on as planned"?! I am appalled at the lack of respect this city shows to this family in their time of need. It's a tragedy for the family. This is about the family, their needs, and how we should have acted as a city and community. It is not an opportunity to play music for the public.

Maybe a course in tact and etiquette should be required for the city government.

There were not enough officers to clear off EVERY single person. There were about 7 officers on scene.

I understand but - I think that is what 'back up' is for. Are there only seven policemen in the town? I've seen more police down the street when kids were racing their cars @ 65mph is all. I had 27 cars zoom down my street in under 10 minutes the 4th of July where they thought an officer was down. A man with a gun in close proximity to a park full of people and playground full of children - wouldn't that warrant officers from Aberdeen, State Police, the Sheriff's Office, and in a pinch - the Transportation Police? He was so close to all those people and the children, in such a state. I thought more forethought would have happened by those monitoring the situation. I'm just thinking out loud here.

Keep in mind all this happened in just under 30 minutes. It was not the police department's call to continue with the festivities. Once the scene was cleaned up and finished, everything resumed as normal, as usual.
