UPDATED: Man Dies in Collision on Route 22
An accident shortly after 5 a.m. Thursday closed part of Route 22 in Aberdeen.

UPDATED (11:35 a.m.)—A man died Thursday morning after his car collided with a tractor trailer at the intersection of MD Route 22 and Beards Hill Road, according to a news release from the Aberdeen Police Department.
Robert Simmons, 47, of Aberdeen, had to be extricated from his sedan by members of the Aberdeen Fire Department. Simmons received treatment at the scene and was transported to Harford Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by medical officials, according to Lt. Fred Budnick, a spokesman for the Aberdeen Police Department.
The tractor trailer was driven by Nelson Chambers, 38, of Mechanicsburg, PA, according to police. Chambers was not injured.
The accident took place at 5:09 a.m.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Members of the Maryland Transportation Authority Police Crash Team and Commercial Vehicle Inspection Team are assisting in the investigation.
The accident happened in the area between Interstate 95 and U.S. Route 40, and is a busy roadway for commuters trying to reach Aberdeen Proving Ground.
Consider utilizing the Riverside or Havre de Grace exits on I-95, and accessing Route 40 from either MD Route 136 or MD Route 155.
Local travelers can use a detour of Route 22 West to Long Drive to Gilbert Road to Maxa Road to Beards Hill Road to Paradise Road to Route 22.

A Medivac helicopter flew over the area of Aberdeen High School around 5:30 a.m. and circled before landing at the scene, according to radio transmissions.

So very sad. My prayers and sympathy go out to the family. How many accidents and deaths will have to occur at this intersection before some INTELLIGENT changes are made??? This has and continues to be a dangerous area and is even busier than before. The small differences that were made only made it more congested and downright confusing!!

This is the worst accident I have ever seen in my area. I was on my way to work when I saw this. Route 22 and Beards Hill is one of the most dangerous intersections in Aberdeen. This is like my third time I've seen the accident, same spot. The city should do something about it before another life comes to waste.

Read it carefully: It said MDTA was assisting in the investigation, not that they were responsible for the scene. I was listening to the radio traffic most of the morning; MSP's accident reconstruction crew was requested at the scene but was not available.

Please do not let this happen again! Mr. Simmons has been traveling this intersection for many years. You must make it safer for all! Mr. Robert Simmons was a wonderful person, always a good story or joke and all of his family from coast to coast will miss him terribly!

they need to make this intersection left on green arrow only. that's about the only way to make it safer, also they need to put up a red signal warning to notify big rigs the light is about to change that way they won't be so tempted to make this light.

This is a very dangerous intersection. My husband was rear ended at this intersection a few yrs ago. My condolences to mr simmons loved ones.
